Dr. Murphy is a multi-award winning teacher and researcher and full professor at DePaul University. He edits the academic journal Management Decision and authored the book Mutiny and Its Bounty: Leadership Lessons from the Age of Discovery, published by Yale University Press. He lectures internationally and consults to entrepreneurs and firms in Chicago and beyond. He is President of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Cultural Alliance and former Chair of the Management History Division of the Academy of Management. He has published extensively in leading scholarly journals and has been featured by Businessweek, USA Today, The Globe and Mail, US News and World Report, Financial Times, Harvard Business Review, CCTV, and other major outlets. His ability to explain complex entrepreneurial phenomena clearly and compellingly across many different scenarios has made him popular with students, in the business community, and in the media. Dr. Murphy speaks Mandarin Chinese and his professional activities focus on social enterprise, entrepreneurship, business history, and international strategic management. In 2017, Dr. Murphy was selected by Future Founders as "Entrepreneurship Professor of the Year" across 11 different Illinois colleges and universities. In 2016, he was winner of ChicagoInno's "50 on Fire" in the education category for his impact on the Chicago innovation economy. He is a thoroughbred racehorse owner and is active in racing and thoroughbred aftercare.
