How can you ask others to join in with what you want to do? Let's get started with this topic. First, look at the vocabulary. 비빔밥. 비빔밥 is one of the most famous Korean traditional foods. It is made with a variety of vegetables, rice, and meat and you mix them together with hot pepper paste. 비빔밥. 삼겹살. 삼겹살 is Koreans' favorite cut of pork which you grill and eat with vegetables. 삼겹살. 김밥. 김밥 is a Korean dish of steamed rice and other ingredients, rolled in sheets of dried laver seaweed. It can refer to the time of day, morning, and also the meal that you eat at the time of the day, breakfast. 아침. 점심. Likewise, 점심 can mean lunchtime or lunch. 점심. 저녁. It is the same with 저녁, which means evening or the meal you have in the evening, dinner. 저녁. Now listen and repeat after me. Let's check your vocabulary. What is it? Please look at the picture and say the word in Korean. Let's study today's expression, AVst -을까요/ㄹ까요? This is a final ending used when offering a suggestion or asking an opinion about what to do together with the listener. When translated into English, it means 'Shall we do something together?' It is placed after an action verb. When the verbs stem ends with a consonant, use -을까요, and when the verb stem ends with a vowel, use -ㄹ까요. Let's look at the examples. Let's use the expression 점심을 먹다 to ask somebody to have lunch together. The verb stem of 먹다 is 먹, which ends with a consonant. Therefore, the correct form is, 점심을 먹을까요? Shall we have lunch? How can you ask somebody to watch a movie together? Yes. To watch a movie is 영화를 보다 in Korean. The verb stem 보 in 보다 ends with a vowel. Therefore, we get 영화를 볼까요? which means, shall we watch a movie? Let's practice one more time. Ask someone to read a book together. In the expression 책을 읽다, the verb stem 읽 ends with a consonant. So, we say 책을 읽을까요? Shall we read a book? Be careful when you pronounce double final consonants. It's pronounced [일글까요]. What if you want to go to Jeju Island with your friend? We can use the expression 같이 제주도에 가다. 제주도에 가다 means to go to Jeju Island and 같이 means together. The verb stem 가 in 가다 ends with a vowel. So the sentence is changed to 같이 제주도에 갈까요?, meaning 'Shall we go to Jeju Island together?'. Did you notice the pronounciation [가치]? The pronunciation of the final consonant ㅌ(티읕) changes to /ㅊ/ sound before an ㅣ(이) vowel. Therefore, the word meaning 'together' is pronounced [가치]. Try reading other words. Yes, they are read [바치] and [소치]. The same rule applies to the final consonant ㄷ(디귿). It changes to /ㅈ/ sound before the vowel ㅣ(이). So the following words are pronounced [구지], [마지], [해도지]. Now let's practice. Change the given sentence to a suggestion. Now listen to the questions and answer. Now, it's time to do some speaking practice. First, take a look at the dialogue. 배가 고파요. The first person said, I am hungry. Then the answer to that was, 점심을 먹을까요? Shall we have lunch? The second person suggested having lunch together. Now listen and repeat after me. This time, please respond to me with a question. Good. Now, speak to your friend and let them respond with a question. Excellent work. Now, can you answer me? 배가 고파요. You can answer with 저녁을 먹을까요? or with 같이 식당에 갈까요? Well done. Now you can ask your Korean friend to go to a restaurant. Next, let's watch some video clips. Listen carefully. How did you do today? In this unit, you learned how to suggest an activity to others. That's all for this unit. And next time, we'll study how to respond to others' suggestions. Let's meet again soon. 안녕히 계십시오.
