From the many organizations that Google has worked with over the years, we recognize some themes and patterns. In our experience, you can break down an organization's maturity journey into three overarching phases, tactical, strategic, and transformational. An organization in the technical phase often has individual cloud workloads in place, but no coherent plan for bringing them all together, nor a strategy for future enhancements. The focus is on reducing the cost of discrete systems now getting to the cloud with minimal disruption. The winds are quick, but there is no provision for scale. This is a short term goal. An organization in the tactical phase might want the tactical advantage of reducing cost and minimizing IT disruption. So they move some of their on premises virtual machines to the cloud. Organizations in the next phase, the strategic phase, have a broad vision that governs individual workloads which are designed and developed based on future needs and scale. In this stage, they've started to embrace change, and the people and process portions of the equation are now involved. IT teams are both efficient and effective, increasing the value of harnessing the cloud for business operations. This is a midterm goal. An organization in this phase might want to have a more strategic approach to increase their IT value. So they change and design modern cloud native web apps, data platforms, and artificial intelligence. Organizations in the third phase, the transformational phase, have cloud operations functioning smoothly. And have turned their attention to integrating the data and insights that have been gathered from working in the cloud. In this stage, existing data is transparently shared. A new data is collected and analyzed. The predictive and prescriptive analytics of machine learning are applied. IT is no longer a cost center, but has become a part of the business. This is a long-term goal. An organization operating in this phase wants to do things in the cloud they could never have done before. So they focused their IT efforts to invent and make automated predictions in real time using machine learning. It's possible to visualize how each of the five people focused epics move from the tactical stage to the transformational stage. This helps to provide clarification on what good looks like as cloud maturity evolves. The next video shows an evolution of the desired state for each of the epics as cloud adoption increases across the organization. This framework can be used to understand where you are today and to highlight potential gaps in where you need to be tomorrow.
