Hi there, and welcome to the beginning of another module. Now, you'll start applying the knowledge of the previous modules by analyzing several security challenges. During the next few minutes, I will instruct you on how to do this. At this point, you have seen how we analyze several security challenges. We demonstrated how to unravel a safety case: the Kursk, a security case, the Boston bombings, and a case that entails both safety, and security elements, the Bhopal disaster. Also, last module, you've seen practitioners in the security domain, explaining their tasks, challenges and dilemmas when addressing security issues. In all of these examples, we structured our analysis by means of three basic steps, explore, understand and do. Now, it's your turn to apply those steps to real life case of your choice. I will now explain these steps in more detail. During the exploration phase, you will collect facts and figures on the case at hand. You will also acquire a basic understanding of it's historical, political, and cultural context. One way of doing this is to reconstruct a timeline based on empirical facts. Empirical facts are real life events and actions that played a crucial role in the particular case that you are studying. Remember to adopt a multi actor and a multi level perspective in order to fully grasp the case and its magnitude. In this phase, you're basically reconstructing your version of a seconds from disaster clip. After you explore the case it is time to further your understanding of the security challenge. During this phase you will select two disciplinary lenses that you will be applying to the case. Remember, you adopt a disciplinary lens when you take a perspective, a method, or a concept belonging to a particular academic discipline. For example, from the natural sciences or the social sciences. You've seen us adapting elements of various disciplines when analyzing security cases. For example, Professor Bakker, He adopted the lens of terrorism studies, when he analyzed the Boston bombings. We ask you to adapt two disciplinary lenses that focus on different elements of your case. It is your job to find out what elements of your case these few answers rely on, these could be causes effects strategies or societal impact. Finally, you will enter the doing phase. In this phase, you will do two things. First, you will combine the factual and the disciplinary knowledge you gained during the previous steps. This will enable you to fully grasp the complexity of the case. Second you will focus on how to address such a security challenge. In other words, how to do security. This is done by focusing on the strategies and the practices that were adopted by actors involved in your case. So you have to ask yourself, what can we learn from this case? And how can we address modern day security challenges even better. On a course page, you can find the handful of cases. Please select one, and assess the case by means of the three step model, explore, understand and do. In case you want to refresh your memory on this model, remember that we provided a detailed explanation in module three of this course. Feel free to watch the video again. I wish you good luck, and I hope you will enjoy your case study research. Please know that detailed instructions can be found on the course page.
