I'm Vic Strecher, and I'm a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. A lot of my research lately has been in the area of purpose in life. You might be asking, what does purpose in life mean? What is the purpose in life? Do I have a purpose in life? I think about it pretty simply, actually. I think about a purpose as having a goal or set of goals around the things that matter most in your life. If we unpack that a little bit, we might start with, what do I value in my life? You might go, well, I don't know, I suppose my family. Well, maybe I'll ask you, what's on the wallpaper of your smartphone? Is it your kids? Is it your partner or spouse? Is it your dog? Is it nature? Is it some beautiful work of art? That may be a starting point to just think about what I value the most. Setting a goal around that to be an amazing father or to support the local arts, that can become a purpose in your life. So that's what we're talking about. Also, part of purpose is who you are, what your self is. So it's a self-organizing life aim that you have and in the way that it organizes your life. It helps you focus on the things that matter most and at the same time, helps you unfocus away from the things that don't matter a lot. There are a lot of things that we're exposed to that don't really matter a lot. If we could maybe rid ourselves of that focus or just that noise in our lives and focus on the things that matter most, especially right now during this crisis, it could help us a lot. So we know that people who have a strong purpose and direction in their lives are more productive in their lives. They're actually happier in their lives. They have less depressive symptoms over time. All of those things are super-positive. So a life purpose doesn't mean that you have to keep this same purpose for your entire life. In fact, purpose is often change, and they often change during crazy tragic events. So people who have gone through earthquakes, through tsunamis, through cancer, through the loss of a loved one, often change their purpose. This is a perfect time to re-examine your life and ask yourself again, what matters most now? So many people are saying the things that matter most now are no longer things. It's not my car, it's not something. It's the people who are very close to me. So you could start building a purpose around those people who matter most.
