[MUSIC] Let's talk about modern web application architectures. I'd like to show you a few right now. As the first lecture in this course, I wanted to show you some web applications and ask you to think about the significance of web applications in the modern world. If you think about it, web applications, they're our portal to the world. It's how many of us shop, it's how we find our news. If you'd like to secure a hotel room, this is a common way to do it is by purchasing it through the web. Here's a boutique website that shows responsive design, if you scale it down to phone size you can still view the content on this page. Scale it back up to desktop size you'll be able to see it formatted differently, so again, this is an example of responsive design that we'll learn about in this course. The web is how we learn new things, it's a common platform now for engaging with content that allows us to learn new things. It's how we invest and bank. We use the web more and more for entertainment purposes. Search is one of the most important functionalities on the web, the web is used extensively for searching. And if you think about it every company in the world from a Fortune 500 company to a one person start-up almost all of them need a web presence. And in this course we'll learn how to build these types of modern web application architectures that I'm showing you. Google has summarized the Year in Search for 2015. So if you think about what happened in that year one of the most important events where the awful terror attacks that took place in Paris. And you can see some very interesting analytics here that show you the manner in which search is use now to inform nearly the entire world. So the terror attacks actually took place at 9:18 not 9:20 that shows here, because you'll see immediately at 9:18 in Paris they were looking and asking questions about what's happening, what is the state of emergency? Why did they attack the Bataclan? And you'll see within another minute, this search has spread to Paris. Again, what is happening in Paris? The white here shows universally asked questions, and the gray are commonly asked questions. And if a color shows up, these are specific to a given locale. You'll see some of those in just a moment. It spreads to London, then to New York, to Sydney, to Madrid, where they ask, how do I put. This is a unique question that's happening more so in Madrid than other places. How do I put the French flag up on Facebook? They're located close to Paris and so they feel an affinity and want to do something about it. Toronto. It spreads to San Francisco, to Hong-Kong, to Delhi, to Tokyo where they're trying to understand, are these attacks even still happening. And within an hour it's spread entirely around the world to Brazil. So, this is a very interesting set of analytics. It kind of shows you what happens when people have access to the web in order to conduct these searches. What I'd like to end this lecture with is a look back at 2015, where Google summarized some of the things that have happened during that year.
